Uchimizu: 打水

Tachikata (dancer): Geiko Momino of Ponto-chō
Jikata (accompanist): Geiko Tomizuru of Ponto-chō

It is an old custom in Japan to sprinkle the entranceway and garden of your home with water (Uchimizu) when you’re expecting a guest. This ballad tells the story of a woman preparing for her lover, to only be stood up, weeping to the melancholic sound of crickets.

This is one of my favorite Ko-uta. Enjoy!

Lyrics:

打水の
Uchimizu no
Shitataru Kusa ni Hikaru Tsuyu
Koi ni Kogare te Naku Mushi no
Koe o aware to Kiku hodo no
Sabishii Waga Mi ni
Dare ga shita
